The Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet is a legendary wristwatch with an unforgettable octagonal-shaped case and a striking set of hexagonal screws that create the impression of a bolted down, industrial-inspired bezel…
Its design describes a coveted luxury with a steeped history that harkens back to 1972– a time when the stainless steel sports watch was thriving. Top models from the collection include the perpetual calendars and tourbillons of the range. But the Royal Oak reference: 15450SR.OO.1256SR.01 has something incredibly sumptuous and indulgent to offer lovers of cult steel sports watches.
The unprecedented stainless steel watch was thanks to the work of Gerald Genta, which saved the company from financial collapse following the damage of the quartz crisis. The tip-off came from Italy, indicating a possible interest in the steel sports watch market. Something completely new, sporty and elegant was about to put Audemars Piguet on the map once again for its innovative approach to technical timekeeping.
Designer, Gerald Genta was not new to the watch world. He had already created masterpieces for the likes of Omega and Patek Philippe. One of the most interesting facts about the design of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch is that it only took an overnight job for the designer to present his ground-breaking design to the prestigious Swiss company. Genta later stated that the Royal Oak was the invention of his entire career, despite the success of the legendary Patek Philippe Nautilus.
Eight hexagonal gold screws secured the bezel of the Royal Oak down– a feature that is still present in the design of this reference: 15450SR.OO.1256SR.01. The model took inspiration from a traditional diver’s helmet – an idea that he chanced upon as he watched a diver emerging from the waters of Lake Geneva shortly beforehand. The octagonal-shaped case of this Royal Oak 15450SR.OO.1256SR.01, like others of the past, is integrated with 50-meter water resistance and that instantly recognisable octagonal-shaped case crafted from strong, durable, corrosion-resistant stainless steel.
What makes this model particularly fetching is its elegant 18ct rose gold bezel, with matching accents seen in the stick indexes around the watch’s hour track and the screw-locked crown (which also helps to keep the delicate internal parts of the watch safe from the effects of water damage). Deceivingly, the 39mm case appears larger on the wrist than it is in reality, however, still manages to sit nicely on the slenderer of wrists. Another characteristic of the Royal Oak that is celebrated in the Audemars Piguet watch 15450SR.OO.1256SR.01 is its “Grande Tapisserie” dial rendered in sophisticated silver tones. The 18ct pink gold applied markers and luminous-coated hands are a beautiful contrast against this backdrop which boasts the famous grid-like pattern.
Aside from the practical date aperture given to the 3 o’clock location on the dial, this Audemars Piguet watch remains as clutter-free and as simple as one would expect a watch from this range to be. The hands are propelled by the self-winding Manufacture Calibre 3120, which provides a 60-hour power reserve and operates at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour. This performance can be admired through a transparent caseback feature crafted from anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. The movement’s monobloc oscillating weight crafted from 18ct gold and some 40 jewels can be caught sight of through this elegant viewing window.
Of course, there are diamond-set models from the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak range that communicate an unwavering sense of luxury, but this reference 15450SR.OO.1256SR.01 has the unique ability to combine a practical design with a refined essence. The model comes secured on a stainless steel and 18ct rose gold bi-colour bracelet with a folding clasp that provides a snug fit on the wrist. Said folding clasp is also adorned with the iconic “AP” logo to match the lettering emblazoned onto the surface of the watch’s “Tapisserie” patterned dial underneath 12 o’clock marker.
